It has been proven that massage has proven health benefits. Not only does massage offer the obvious relief from tight, short and knotted muscles, but it can also provide a great opportunity to mentally relax and unwind.
Stress is actually one of the biggest threats of all when it comes to our health and the havoc it wreaks on your body should not be understated. Stress not only makes you feel miserable when you come home from work but it can also suppress your immune system (making you more likely to become ill), cause headaches, prevent you from absorbing nutrients in your food, deteriorate your brain, take years off your life and much more. Massage is one of the most effective ways to combat this and therefore we should all be trying to get a little more massage in our lives.
There’s just one problem: you first need to convince someone to give you a massage!
Or at least that used to be the case. These days we have plenty of massagers that we can use to do the job for us and they’re nearly just as good. We reviewed a whole bunch of massagers for you to help you pick the best one…
Does it get the Job done?
For this review, we’re looking at the VIKTOR JURGEN Shiatsu Kneading Massage Pillow. As the name rather suggests, this is a massager that takes the form of a pillow. Whereas some massagers are cushions that you strap to your chair or handheld tools that you use to reach around and massage your own back, this is a pillow that you can place under your neck while you head off to sleep.
Of course this being a small, compact device that you can easily pick up, there’s also nothing to stop you from deciding that you want to use the pillow in a variety of other ways: you can place it under your buttocks for instance, you can rest it against your upper back… etc. The design of the product is fairly executive in all black and with red, radiating heat. It’s a relatively small, pillow that does need to be plugged in to be used effectively but which also comes with an added hand control for easy use. The massage itself is shiatsu style and utilizes 4 ‘deep-kneading’ rotating nodes which also heat up to provide additional relaxation for the muscles. The combination of the heat and the gentle kneading should be enough to work out most stiffness or knots in the muscles.
Pros and Cons
- The big advantage of the pillow design is just how easily it can be thrown in a bag, or used on the couch. Combine this with the remote and you can use the device as often as you like. The kneading motion and added heat is a combination that a lot of people find particularly effective and beneficial, while the option to customize the direction, penetration and heat setting mean you should be able to find a setting that you personally enjoy. Another advantage to this design is the fact that it can be used for multiple body parts.
- The main negative here is that this is a corded product, which does limit use to being near an outlet only. Of course the four nodes is a relatively paltry number compared with some larger massager products but this is something you will likely be fully aware of before getting started.
Massagers come in all different shapes and sizes these days, as we have discovered during our testing. Often, finding the best product for you simply means deciding on which type of use you have in mind and then which form factor best suits that kind of scenario.
But if you do decide you like the idea of a pillow massager that can be inserted just behind the upper shoulders or behind the neck, then the VIKTOR JURGEN Shiatsu Kneading Massage Pillow is a great product that you won’t go far wrong with. With four nodes, heating and a remote, it comes with most of the features you’d expect from a basic massager. The only limitation is the cord but if you intend on using this on a sofa at home, that likely won’t be an issue.
